What is Blepharoplasty?
Drooping upper eyelids or bags under the eyes can make you look older than you feel. Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty can correct this. The procedure can be used to lift eyelids, remove excess skin from upper lids or remove fatty pouches under the eyes. During a consultation with Dr.Liu, you will find out if blepharoplasty is a procedure that would help you achieve the more youthful look you are wanting.

Where is the procedure performed?
Blepharoplasty can be performed in our AAAHC accredited outpatient surgery center under local anesthesia. For upper lids, a fine incision is placed in the crease above the eye and a small amount of excess skin and muscle is removed. On the lower lid an incision can be made just inside the lid to remove fatty deposits or placed in the natural smile crease to remove excess skin and muscle. Depending on the extent of the surgery, the procedure can take 30 minutes to one hour per eye.

What should I expect after surgery?
After surgery, patients should elevate their head and periodically apply cold compresses. You will also be instructed to use an antibiotic ointment. The area will be bruised, swollen and sore for one to two weeks. Contacts should not be worn during this time. Make-up can be worn about ten days post surgery. The fine scars will fade in about two months.

Will my insurance cover the procedure?
If eyelid problems interfere with vision, it may be covered by your medical insurance. However, if the surgery is done for cosmetic purposes only, most insurance carriers will not cover it. It is the patient's responsibility to check on the degree of coverage their insurance offers. Our billing department will assist you in any way they can.
